Sensory-Informed Therapy for SLPs: Supporting Connection & Regulation

This course equips school-based speech-language pathologists with both foundational and practical knowledge of sensory processing and regulation as they relate to communication development. Grounded in a neurodiversity-affirming framework, the course emphasizes the importance of connection over compliance, encouraging therapists to support regulation in ways that honor each child's unique sensory profile and lived experience. Participants will explore how sensory systems, motor planning, and levels of arousal influence a child’s ability to engage, attend, and communicate effectively in academic settings. Emphasis is placed on fostering safety, attunement, and trust within therapeutic relationships, integrating sensory-informed practices that respect autonomy and promote authentic communication. This course also highlights the dynamic interplay between sensory, motor, and language systems and emphasizes the value of interprofessional collaboration in supporting the whole child across school environments.

Feedback On This Course:

"This was one of my favorite advanced therapy courses!  So many strategies to use right away in therapy, especially for my autistic students.  I plan to use the helpful handouts with parents for conferences to explain the need to work on regulation and engagement.  Although I am not an OT, I can understand the sensory system much better and would feel comfortable giving teachers and parents strategies."
