Secondary SLP:
Practical Strategies for Middle & High School 

**New Course Fall 2026​

This graduate course is designed for school-based speech-language pathologists who want to develop a deeper understanding of providing effective and meaningful communication services to middle and high school students. Students will explore the unique role of the secondary SLP, including assessment, goal development, service delivery models, therapy planning, collaboration, advocacy, and functional communication support. This course will address strategies for supporting diverse secondary caseloads, planning effective mixed-group therapy sessions, creating meaningful interventions, and helping students develop communication skills that promote success in school, community, and postsecondary settings. Students will also examine the role of the secondary SLP in transition planning and supporting adolescents as they develop the communication skills needed for increased independence and participation in adulthood. This course answers the question: How can secondary SLPs move beyond the IEP to provide student-centered services that support communication, participation, and independence?
